Writing Workshop
Writing Workshop, following the same architecture as Reading Workshop, is a time when students use all that they know about one genre of writing to create compelling written work. As in Reading Workshop, students are able to choose the subject matter of their writing, guided simply by the teaching points of the particular genre that they are studying.
This year, students will grow tremendously as writers, with many thinking for the very first time about voice, details, and structure. To keep track of their thinking and growth, students will use composition notebooks to record seed ideas, thinking maps, story leads, early drafts, and eventually, edited and revised writing. By collecting all of their ideas and writing in one place, it easily allows the writer to return to past work and reflect upon their transformation as a writer.
Upon the conclusion of each unit, students and families will celebrate their successes with a publishing party where writers can exhibit their work and receive feedback. This day serves as a reward to students for all of their hard work, and positions them to use what they've learned from this genre in future units.
